Faith Is Not Politics' Friend

2min read + 9min video.

It may surprise you that as a Christian, I'm concerned about the growing trend of Christian nationalism and movements to interlink the Bible and Gospel with publicly controlled institutions (e.g., schools, political events). I shared in another post that I was a Christian missionary in a foreign country for many years. My experience there taught me a lot - perhaps just as much as I taught others about Christ. I came away from that experience with a strongly held belief that we (the Church) should not be asking non-Christians to teach the Bible in schools, and not want to mix our Christian faith with politics. Both of those scenarios are guaranteed to have Non-Christians representing the context of our faith quite poorly, and THAT will turn young people away faster than we've ever seen before.

While in Christian ministry, I have also grown in my appreciation for NOT engaging in political discussions within churches. I feel very right and at peace focusing on God's Kingdom and not political leadership. The only change since then has been what ignited my passion to counteract Trumpism - and that relates to my belief that DJT is the chief blasphemer of the nation but MAGA Christians are not just supporting him, but are emulating him as well. For that reason, I connect strongly with what this pastor had to say about it. Click on the image to watch it. It's just under 9 minutes long.

Pastor Calls Out Trump’s Bible Blasphemy In EXPLOSIVE Sermon

As a Christian, I believe my faith should inform my values and actions, but I don't want that mandated for others. It will breed further contempt, and Christians are already plenty disregarded as it is.

Jesus taught us to "love our neighbors as ourselves" (Mark 12:31), and we haven't been doing that very well for a very very long time. What if we simply focused on modeling Christ-like character in our own lives and communities? Don't we believe that the Gospel is best served by living it out, rather than as a rallying cry for political overhaul? I certainly do.
